Program Goal
The primary goal is to stop the rate of growth of overweight and
obesity morbidity and mortality by promoting physical activity and
healthy nutrition using evidence based interventions.
Approximately 23.1% of Canadians aged 18 or older, an estimated 5.5
million adults, had a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, indicating
that they were obese. Consequently, a majority of Canadians—almost
60%—were in a weight range that increased their risk of developing
health problems. The likelihood of being obese and developing obese
associated diseases has been directly related to an improper diet and
lack of exercise.
This program uses primary prevention interventions to reduce the
diseases associated with being overweight and obese and uses secondary
interventions (such as proper diet and exercise) to reduce weight and
reduce the risk of weight regain.
Target Population
Every population can benefit from this program; however the primary
target population is men and women who are overweight and obese as
directed by respective waist circumference, body fat percentage and Body
Mass Index measurements. |
