Good
health is not the absence of disease: it is optimal functioning of the
physical and the mental components of the body. Aging is a treatable
condition!
Reverse
Aging by Sang Whang is available
for sale at the Centre for Preventive Medicine.
Environment,
diet and lifestyle influence the rate at which you age. Many risk
factors are significantly associated with biologic age: smoking,
consumption of red meat, alcohol intake, intensity and frequency of
exercise, life expectancy at birth and at age 45 years in the place of
residence, years of school completed and race.
You
cannot change your genes* - yet - but you can change your habits;
-
Stop smoking
-
Floss and brush your
teeth daily
-
Avoid risks - use
seat belts, bike helmets and sunscreen
-
Eat a well-balanced
diet
-
Drink alcohol in
moderation
-
Eat breakfast
-
Laugh - a lot
-
Become a lifelong
learner
-
Exercise regularly
-
Build and maintain
strong social networks
-
Manage your time and
your stress levels
Genetic
predisposition doesn't have to mean predestination. If your family
history suggests you carry a dangerous gene, you can be placed on
high-alert surveillance. Men whose mothers had family-linked breast
cancer may, for example, be at high risk of colon and pancreatic
cancer. Awareness of this should lead to more frequent testing and
earlier treatment. Women who learn of a history of ovarian and breast
cancer before menopause might choose to get the test for the BRCA1 or
BRCA2 gene.
